A Tree With Great Character - Eastern North Carolina

I came upon this beautifully twisted tree on my way home from a visit to Cliffs of the Neuse State Park. I'm guessing its some kind of oak, though I can't say for sure. To my eyes this deciduous tree has a lot of character. I believe I'd crossed into Lenoir county before taking this photo, but I may have still been in Wayne county. (I need to learn to take notes!).
