Barn Near Aurora NC - Rural Decay

I stopped to photograph the remains of this old barn when driving home from Aurora, North Carolina. Located in rural Beaufort county, I can't decide if this building was abandoned before the build was finished or if it has simply deteriorated in ths fashion.
